Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Review and other stuff
Been a while since I’ve posted here. For a few reasons. One reason is I have been working alot, and another reason is I have had NO idea what to write about, so today I am gonna write a Crisis Core Review and update on other things. Anyways Let’s get started.
So Crisis Core, where to start…
Story 8/10
Story is really good. Especially since you already know what’s going to happen to Zack at the end. It still makes you want to cry when the certain thing happens. (I know I did) it does a very good job in telling Sephiroth and Cloud’s backstory. I was hooked the entire time. Even goes into ZackxAerith’s relationship.
Gameplay 8.5/10
Battle System is absolutely amazing. It is an action RPG, kind of like Kingdom Hearts just a little bit slower. Real Time menu, no jumping however or equipped items. However every system has it’s flaws. This system is pretty…random. Such as Leveling up, Leveling up Materia, Limit Breaks, and summoning. However Leveling up is not entirely random, after a bit of research there is experience it’s just a hidden counter. Limit Breaks show up completely randomly same with materia level ups and summons.
One thing that hurt the gameplay score is the length of the game and the lack of directions. There were a few times where I had no idea where to go next. Left it to trial and error. Also the game could easily be beaten in 8 hours if you don’t get distracted by missions.
Sound/Music 10/10
ok…this game. The Music is absolutely fantastic and amazing. Remixed FF7 tracks are gold. especially Still More Fighting, sure it might be nostalgia kicking in but I love them nonetheless. The voice acting is really good as well. Sure there are a few unknown voice actors but they did an amazing job
Controls 9.0/10
Control’s are pretty much perfect. Just kinda wish Zack’s dodge roll wasn’t so…stiff. Also I never found any need for the guard button. using L and R for the command selection is great. O to return to attack is nice. nicely done Square.
Overall 9.5/10
So yeah I loved the game, great prequel to a great RPG. I highly suggest you pick it up if you have a PSP. It’s easily in my top 5 PSP games. Just needs more Length.
On to other things, I am deciding on finding another game to play on my stream (since I just finished Crisis Core). Not sure what one yet. I’m considering a few, those being Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete. Final Fantasy XII: IZJS (in english), or Suikoden. Also no stream from March 2nd to March 11th, as I am going to be away on vacation that week.
My thought of Final Fantasy XIII-2: When can I preorder it!!!! I want the game, if its anything like FF X-2 it is going to be amazing. I honestly cannot wait. Other square announcements don’t excite me really…sure they could be good but they don’t seem mindblowing to be honest.
Anyways thanks for reading and I will try and make my posts be more frequent
Thanks,

PSP streaming. and other recent news
wow…it’s been a while. You can blame wal-mart for having me work alot.
Lately I have been lots…and yes I mean LOTS of questions about how I have been streaming from my PSP. So I thought I’d be nice and let everyone know how I do it.
Required Materials:
A PSP (3000 series is required if you want to stream PSP games via composite cable)
A video output cable. (You can find these at Gamestop or Amazon, They are usually really cheap)
A Capture card (I use a dazzle, but easycap works just as well if you are using a composite cable)
So to stream from your PSP you need to use the video output cable. The only PSPs that are compatible with video output are the 2000 series (slim) the 3000 series, and the Go (but who really wants a go blech) To use your video output cable plug it into the audio port, and either hold the screen brightness button for 5 seconds. Either that or go to video output settings on the XMB and choose switch to video out.
Unfortunately the 2000 series can only output PSP games with a Component cable. Which would require an HD component capture card. Luckily when Sony released the PSP 3000 series, they upgraded the motherboard to allow PSP games to run on the Composite Cable.
One thing about playing PSP games on a composite TV out. If you have ever played HD games on a SD TV you know what I am about to talk about. The visual quality is not as nice as it looks on your PSP. Think of playing Lost Odyssey or Star Ocean 4 on a SDTV. For some games (Crisis Core: FFVII, or Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep as a few examples) the text is really tiny and hard to see. This is only a problem if you play RPGs on your PSP. Another problem is PSP games for some reason are framed on your TV. Personally I find this to be extremely stupid, but I guess its better to be framed than have quality degraded.
So with video output on your TV, you need to run the image from your TV to your capture card. This requires either a video out on your TV to run it to your capture card, or splitters.
Now the problem with Streaming PSP games, is they will be framed on your TV, which also means the stream will also be framed. I stream with FME, and to fix this I use the “Crop” feature. Which allows you to only capture a specific part of your screen. It will be different with every TV, but mine is 50 for each option (Top, Bottom, Right, and Left) However when you do this…the quality will be drastically degraded. I have yet to find out what to do to fix this. (if anyone finds out let me know.
Anyways that is how I stream from my PSP with a full screen capture. I have an example here if anyone is interested
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPjX3iMOMzE
Anywho, enough of that for now. I have been casting Final Fantasy IX lately via PSP. So I will be playing that this week. and probably until the end of the year. So be sure to check in over the next few weeks if you are interested in seeing that game.
Anyways im stopping it here. Happy Gaming everyone.
Thanks,
Shinky
FFXII IZJS ftw
Final Fantasy XII IZJS, the holy grail version of Square’s epic rpg that rivals even FFX for extended play long past last note of the theme sung by Angela Aki, “Kiss Me Goodbye” is heard. Many ask at first what IZJS is, and basically it is the final version of the game that was released in Japan as part of the international series and included the “Zodiac Job System”. This system replaced the old Licensing board with an complete turn around on how to play the characters and classes in the game.
The Zodiac table of jobs has 12 of the main jobs more associated with Tactics, like breaker or machinist, than the newer Final Fantasy games. When you first received your character, you assign one type of job for them that they will be for the rest of the game. This builds a custom LP table that will work around just that particular set of enhancements and equipment needed for that class.
- Aries – White Mage
- Taurus – Uhlan
- Gemini – Machinist
- Cancer – Red Mage
- Leo – Knight
- Virgo – Monk
- Libra – Time Mage
- Scorpio – Breaker
- Sagittarius – Archer
- Capricorn – Black Mage
- Aquarius – Mononofu
- Pisces – Shikari
This version of the game incorporates far too many minor and some major changes to list here. A major change is that while in the original game every spell and ability could be bought at shop or from various merchants, now the most powerful or useful ones are found at treasure chests. This leads to more hours of exploring the vast game world. But to balance this, there is also a new option of speeding the game up by pressing L1 button. With all of the changes and the new table format, this version is without a doubt the best.
Only one problem is that this final mix version is only in Japanese. Without the help of a great “gamer engineer” named FFGriever, we might never have played this game in English. If you know what an “iso” file is, you should be able to follow along on this outline to making a copy of the file. These instruction are merely here to help you better understand the gaming world and of course not to “hack” anything.
For the process of building the file you will need two disk ISO files or what is basically a image of your game disk. One is the North American version of the game and the 2nd is the IZJS copy. You extract you images using the easy wizard driven program called Alcohol 120%. Download just the demo since you only need this once and it is fully functional.
1. Start Alcohol 120%
2. Select the Copy Wizard option
3. Select the drive that will read the disc
4. Deselect the copy current disc on the fly option
5. For data type select which console the game is for PS1/ PS2 then press Next
6. Select your image location and name it then press Next
7. Select the drive that will write the disc and write Speed
8. Look through any other options and change if needed
9. Make sure that the data type selected is the same as selected above
10. Press Start to begin

Now comes the harder part since most do not have a physical copy of the Japanese International version. If you do have that then follow the above steps like with NA and make a ISO file. Many seasoned computer maniacs shy away from using Torrents and so begins mini lecture. Let me explain that a torrent is a copy of one file that is on 10 or 100 people’s computers that you can access and download fast. The computers that have the file for you to download from are called “seeds” and they are just regular people like you who are helping to share the file. You need a client program that reads the torrent link file and starts up the download. I recommend for ease of your use and at no cost, uTorrent. Download this program and install allowing it to set up firewall installations. Keep in mind if the program is not on in the system tray then it’s not running and no one can do anything to your computer. Plus, if you do not make any torrent link files of your own then nothing is coming off your computer “yet”.
Where everyone gets crazy about torrents is how they are sure they are going to get virus from something. LET ME SAY IT PLAINLY… you only get a virus from a torrent if you download a bad file just like you can do with your emails every single day. You are not going to get a bad file unless “all” the people you’re connecting to have a bad copy. Now, once you have completed the file transfer is when you can make the choice to not become a “seeder” yourself and just turn the program off. Utorrent will automatically start making the file open to others as long as you have the program up. Right click on the file name and hit stop. This makes Utorrent not share your copy. Since we are working on limited project and if you are not a torrent person then uninstall the program after the download and it’s all gone for good.
Now we begin to make the copy of your game. We run what is called a “patcher” now to take the two files and merge them into one new file that has English menus and dialogue added onto the new version of the game. A patcher is really just that. It reads the program or file and changes just words in there to what we want. You need to download this file and unzip it to a directory a drive that has plenty of space. You should already have to copies of the game on that disk and you will end up with one more copy before it is finished. Below I put the exact directions on how to run the program which can be found in the zip file too. You should always check inside your zip files of projects like this for the most current read me in case there have been changes.
FFXII Int: ZJS English Conversion Patch by ffgriever v0.19
Usage: zjs_repack [-h] [image_eng [image_zjs [image_output]]]
You can just make sure that you have “ff12us.iso” and “ff12zj.iso” in the
same directory as the main executable. Then, just double click the patcher
and wait until it’s done. You can specify the required file names if you
want to (you can specify only the first one, first two or all of them).
The default output file is “ff12engzjs.iso”.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH FREE SPACE ON HDD AND THAT YOU HAVE READ/WRITE
PERMISSIONS. MAKE ALSO SURE, THAT THE “TEMP” DIRECTORY IS IN PLACE, AS WELL
AS ADDITIONAL, MODIFIED FILES. IT’S ADVISED TO LOG THE PATCHING PROCESS INTO
A FILE.(see file for all the changes being worked on)
Now, this is where the pirating tale ends for this time. You now have the ISO file and need to do something with it. In the next blog I will explain how to make yourself a working game and where you can run it. If you are person who knows emulators on the PC, you can do that now, and enjoy FFXII IZJS my friends.
Peace Out~Tebian !
The Evolution of Final Fantasy. My opinion on it.
Hi Again
So…I’ve been thinking lately. Final Fantasy has changed so much over the years. Anyone think it’s gotten better? Gotten worse? Or, is it the same old, same old?
Personally, I like what has happened to it. Back in 1987, I was not a fan of Final Fantasy (but then again…I was only 1 year old ) It seems that as I got older I started to appreciate what a great series the games were. Sure, the series does have its downsides; some games are absolutely a chore to play through and may even be hard at times. However, as overrated as the series is (I mean is it really the best RPG series out there?) I still enjoy it.
- FF1 was a pretty good game. It had a very basic battle system, and needed lots of fixes. But this was Squares wild card. Square was trying to go out with a bang, and it was the total opposite. It shot them into godlike status now known as one of the top RPG developers out there.
- FF2 was…how can I say this nicely. It was different. It was a complete revamp from Final Fantasy 1. It had a completely new battle system (Which was adopted by the SaGa series) Characters leveled up according to how they were used in battle. No longer did you need to buy higher level spells. Use a spell enough and it got stronger. Personally, I thought that the story in FF2 was much weaker than the first one, and the characters had some personality…but I didn’t like them in the least. This was squares first attempt at an in-depth story in an RPG (at least to my knowledge)
-FF3 introduced the current job system. Unfortunately, this game stayed in Japan. Unlike in FF1, in FF3 you could change jobs whenever you felt like it. This was an amazing change of pace from FF1. Jobs in FF3 changed many things from stat growth, to what you weapons and armor you could equip. Personally, I think this is one of the best games in the series even if it did require you to grind until your fingers got numb if you wanted even a slight chance at the final boss. This game did eventually get remade for the DS. However, it was a weak remake.
-FF4. This is where the series starts to really take its shape and form. What made FF4 so revolutionary? It introduced the ATB (Active Time Battle) system. ATB gave a time gauge to each character, and when it filled up it allowed a character to take an action. Also, certain actions had charge times (Items, summons, magic, etc.) so you had to use a little bit of strategy for the final bosses. This is where the series started to have really good storytelling, and went into the characters emotions. Also….I believe this had the series’ first love story (go listen to FFIV theme of love on Youtube, it’s amazing) This game really made you feel for the game.
FF5. This game is nice. However, it didn’t really add that much to the series (which is probably why we didn’t see it until Final Fantasy Anthology for the PS1). The Job system did, however, get a MAJOR upgrade. Now Classes had specific abilities that could be traded between classes if you leveled that specific job up. The story was not that great, but the music…it’s amazing. Clash on the big bridge…listen to it. And love it!
FF6- Whoa…did we just advance hundreds of years into the future. This game is amazing…known as one of the best rpgs of all time to some people. This was the first game in the series to allow party selection. It had a total of 12 (?) party members and you could select 4 for your party. This game really had quite a bit of character development, and it did very well at telling the backstory and personality of most of the characters (aside from the optional ones). The magic system was very good too. You equip espers (also known as summons, eidolons, Guardian Forces, etc) and each esper taught from 1-5 spells. Fight enough and you learn that ability. It was unique at the time, and has been adopted by many series.
FF7. Final Fantasy’s leap into 3D. This game…has a league of raging fanboys. Not that it’s a bad thing. There are LOTS of reasons why. The characters in this game are very good. Everyone loves them. Cloud may in fact be the most popular character in a video game ever. This game was so popular…it did not spawn one spinoff…but…a movie, a sequel, a prequel, and a cell phone game. FF7 has in fact become a series within a series. The story in this game is superb, the villain is well liked (and a pretty boy at that). This game also introduced a usable limit break system, which are more powerful attacks that do LOTS of damage to the enemy or add other effects. If you haven’t played this (then you must live under a rock) then go…now…stop reading. I’ll wait….*jeopardy theme plays* see…it’s a great game. anyways…good game, everyone should give it a shot.
FF8. This is hard to explain. This introduced the junction system…some people love it…other people hate it with a passion. I’m on the love side. Junction system is unique and has never been used since. Unfortunately the junction system is broken. The junction system involves you drawing magic from your enemy and attaching it to your stats to buff them up. The problem with this is, for one, drawing at early game before you learn refining abilities can take hours if your MAG stat isn’t high enough. Also, you can overpower your characters immediately. Either you can make the game completely simple…or limit yourself. This games story…I don’t know. It should have ended at disc 2, but that’s just my opinion. However, the love story in this…I absolutely looooove it. I’ts seriously like something right out of a sappy love novel. I love Rinoa. She is one of my favorite characters in the whole series. The cast really…reflected upon each other to bring them closer together. I really liked that about the game.
FF9. This was a throwback to the old school days of Final Fantasy. It involves bosses, and references to the old Final Fantasy games. Just turn your head to the side and look at the map. Look familiar? Looks quite a bit like Final Fantasy 1′s world map…kinda. It involves the original four elemental fiends. This was basically a game for old school fans. It’s one of the most enjoyed titles of the series. The characters are…noob friendly so to say. The battle system is simple and easy to understand. It’s a tad on the easy side, though.
FF10- *sigh* FFX, I’m personally not a fan. However, everyone loves this game. I hate EVERY character in the game, but apparently everyone is liked by someone, somewhere. It had the first interactive mini game, Blitzball. Blitzball can be fun if you want to get into it. Basically, it’s underwater soccer with a mini rpg type game. Fun, but tedious to get into. This was the first game since FF4 to stray from ATB. FFX uses the CTB (Conditional Turn Based Battle) system. CTB is where every action has a recovery time. If you use weaker attacks you recover faster than something like a overdrive (FFX’s limit break) This game, however,…had an absolutely amazing story, and side quests that can keep you busy for upwards of 120 hours. This game ditched the traditional level up system. It used a sphere grid…which had you move along a board game type map and use certain items to learn abilities and raise stats. Quite unique.
FF10-2 People hate this game. It’s regarded as a chick game. It’s a sequel to FFX, but it was good IMO. It had a BAD story. However, I loved the battle system; changing jobs in mid battle was amazing. It added a whole new depth to the game…don’t really have much else to say about this.
FF11- It’s an MMO…tha’ts all I gotta say. First MMO of the series…don’t care for them
FF12- Laziest FF game in the whole series Set your gambits right, and the game will basically play itself. This game…has sidequests up the behind. It’s not rare to get over 300 hours on this game alone. This game had ATB…but it was different. It was free roaming…and every action had a charge time. No battle transitions, and everything took place on the world map. This game introduced a license board. Licenses are used for everything. from learning abilities, to raising stats, and even equipping equipment. It was nice,…but seemed sort of tedious.
FF13- This is the newest game in the series (I don’t count FFXIV since it’s an MMO). This game is absolutely gorgeous. The characters are loved (HopexVanille it’ll happen) and the game has a confusing, but an amazing story. This game went back to the sphere grid type level up system. However, it did not use items to learn anything or raise stats. you just move your job level gauge from orb to orb using CP. (this games exp) Ah yes, the job system. FFX-2′s job system…on some SERIOUS crack. not only did you change jobs…you could do it on the fly in a matter of seconds and your whole party changed jobs, not just one. I highly suggest you try it out if you haven’t already.
Alright, so as you can see…FF has changed immensely in the last 23 years. It is a great series, and I hope it goes on for many other years to come.
Anywho, regarding my stream, I have recently picked up Final Fantasy XIII, so I may end up playing through that game again. As for now, I am playing Wild Arms 2. Come check it out; it’s a good classic RPG for PS1. Hope you enjoyed my essay *kicks keyboard* why am I kicking my keyboard you ask? Its a random reference
Anyways, have fun and I hope to see you by my stream this upcoming week
Thanks,
