In 2007 Square released the first Square Enix Battle Tracks CD.  The series now continues with both Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 released last month.The first time around the last track featured an exclusive arrangement by Mitsuto Suzuki from Romancing SaGa.   This time the selections in the collections are good but they have been released before on various soundtracks.  The best part of the music is that a few of the games you might not even have played or have not seen since the first days of the PlayStation.

Volume 2 features music from the Tobal franchise, Einhander, Chocobo’s Mysterious Dungeon, Ergheiz, and Parasite Eve and others. Tobal being the first PS1 game that Square ever published and lost in the history of gaming to many. The Eihander track reminds us of the really great sound track composed by Kenischiro Fukui. Fukui you  might recognize as the keyboardist in The Black Mages, Nobuo Uematsu’s rock band that recently disbanded. The whole Eihander soundtrack being one of the first to have trance or dance style music while you battled your way through side scrolling sci fi madness. The Parasite Eve track brings us to the now famous composer Yoko Shimmura. Interesting to note Parasite Eve had the first soundtrack by Shimomura that included a vocal song. It was the first game she had written for running on a console system that had the recorded sound capability.

Volume 3 features games like Final Fantasy VIII, SaGa Frontier 2, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, and Final Fantasy IX among others. Yasunori Mitsuda composed the original Chrono Trigger material with “Gale” included in the collection. At the release of Final Fantasy IX, Nobuo Uematsu already had 13 years experience making music for the Final Fantasy games the final track of the collections “Battle 1″ is one of the most memorably from the series.
