Heroes of Ruin Soundtrack

Heroes of Ruin is an adventure video game being developed by n-Space and produced by Square Enix for the Nintendo 3DS. It is planned for release on April 3, 2012 in North America and sometime in Spring 2012 in Europe. The game uses both StreetPass and SpotPass technology for a “Traders Network” and daily challenges, respectively. The story of Heroes of Ruin follows four mercenaries who are attempting to find a cure for the ruler of the city of Nexus, who is dying from a curse.
When it comes to the music of Heroes of Ruin, the team were very much aware of the importance of creating an appropriate atmosphere through sound. Perhaps it was unsurprising that in searching for someone that could deliver a soundtrack with both subtlety and power they found their way to Sacha Puttnam.’ Square Enix

Square and N-Space took a big leap of faith hiring a film composer to write a game score,” he admits. “Contrary to my expectations, the two are vastly different. Scoring Heroes has been like navigating a new terrain without a compass while blindfolded. I’m used to film; linear writing. Being in full control of the audience experience, no change whether it’s the first of fiftieth time of viewing. Games present a total break from the past and, having immersed myself in this for six months, I’ve got my bearings and some nice ideas about the future of game music.
“N-Space set a challenge. The music must reflect the state of the character within the game environment. I have tried to honour that aim to the best of my ability. I see now how we can take that concept even further. “We kept the idea of themes, of motifs for characters and situations. Something, save a handful of pros, film score composers seem to have forgotten.” He adds pointedly. “But just as important, Square Enix advised me constantly on making sure the music remained fresh.”
“I’m delighted with the result; it’s a real collaboration. Square Enix and N-Space gave me great feedback and plenty of time, latitude and encouragement; a dream scenario for any artist. Thanks guys! I’ve got the game bug bigtime.”
